Volunteer Update

Hello Bottomless Closet Volunteers! The staff at BC wishes you a joyous holiday season and we look forward to seeing all of you in the new year! As always, please feel free to reach out to me by reply of this email with any feedback, suggestions or concerns you might have.

Bottomless Closet Holiday Schedule

Note: I will not be in the office on Monday, December 28 and Tuesday, December 29. If you should need to adjust your volunteer schedule on either of those days, please email Lakiesha Johnson at ljohnson@bottomlessclosetnyc.org.

Volunteer “Promotions”
To avoid role confusion with our clients, volunteers will now be referred to as Employment Coaches. Sadly, no salary increase will accompany this change in title, but feel free to enjoy full bragging rights!

Warm In the Winter
After such an aggressive Manhattan blizzard, as I’m sure
you can imagine we are very much in need of warm winter
coats for our clients. If you are able, please consider donating
one (or more) of your gently worn winter coats. This harsh winter
season looks as though it will only continue so your generosity
would be greatly appreciated.

 

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities
On-line Job Search
We are still accepting volunteers to be part of our new program. As mentioned in previous updates, we are working to address the evolving needs of our clients and to that end we are creating a new program to support women as they go through the on-line job search and application process. We are seeking both day and evening volunteers who are interested in becoming coaches for this developing program. The training is expected to be held early in the new year.

Evening Workshop Support
During our evening workshops, we are in need of volunteers to check in the clients, handle some light administrative tasks and close up shop at the end of the night. There will be a staff member on hand to answer your questions and provide any guidance you might need.

Save the Date – Volunteer Appreciation Night
Every year as a “thank you” to all of you remarkable volunteers,
Bottomless Closet holds a Volunteer Appreciation Night!
This year’s event is taking place Wednesday, January 27
from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and is hosted by one of our
illustrious founders – Reva Wurtzburger.
We hope to see you all there!

Did you know these latest New York City poverty statistics (based on 40 hour work week)?
· The 2009 Federal poverty level for a family of three is $18,310 ($352.12/week or $8.80/hour)
· The 2009 Federal poverty level for a family of two is $14,570 ($280.19/week or $7.00/hour)
· Minimum wage in NYC is $15,080 ($7.25/hour or $290/week)
· A single mother with one child, earning minimum wage is not considered to be living in poverty.
· A single mother with one child earning minimum wage is eligible for about $246/month in food stamps.
$246/month=$56.77/week=$8.11/day to feed two individuals.
